The Latest Jobs Update May 28

Many backpackers are heading to the harvest hotspots of WA such as Carnarvon and Kununurra. However, it's not as easy as simply rolling into town and getting a job. In both locations there is an oversupply of jobseekers and many people will have to wait 2-3 weeks before getting work. There is no guarantee you will be offered anything after this time.

Kununurra has had 3 weeks of unseasonal rain and the melon season will take a big hit while the sandalwood forestry work has been delayed until the place dries out.

So what to do? If you are persistent and patient and prepared to wait  and have some harvest work experience , you should eventually find work. These areas are notorious for a high  turnover of workers so you just have to wait it out.

If you can't afford the time,  have a look at doing something else until harvest work cranks up in the spring. There's always great hospitality jobs in pubs, roadhouses and resorts and you have your meals and accommodation provided.

We have a variety of jobs  situated all over WA and my advice is to check these out before embarking on a long trip to the North.

Springtime  provides a lot more harvest work opportunities than exist now so why not wait until then.

A recent article on ABC radio National highlighted some of the pitfalls to avoid when searching for harvest work. Its very interesting and here's the link

Until next time, safe travelling
